The personal equipment needed for soccer is pretty basic: all players should have a pair of shinguards and a pair of cleats. When it comes to soccer practice, the name of the game is repetition. Most soccer drills are repeated at least ten times, and often twenty or more, before a new drill is introduced. Drills are also repeated every practice, every season. Soccer drills are designed to perfect the fundamental soccer skills, like passing, shooting, and dribbling. Though this may be frustrating, players should know that repetition leads to perfection. The point is not to do something over and over again, the point is to get better and better at a certain skill. Repetitive practice is a good way to perfect a skill that a player previously did not possess or was performing incorrectly. When a player masters a drill, they are able to perform that function on the field without thinking about it.

Speed Training for Soccer

Even if you are an incredibly strong or agile player, there is little you can do for your team on the soccer field if you have not developed your speed. There are hundreds of exercises you can do to increase your speed, and many of them allow you to work on agility as well. Practice timing runs down a field, and add maneuvering obstacles like cones, arches, ladders, and hurdles. Make sure to work on speed with the soccer ball and without it. If you feel like you have done a good job increasing your speed, add weight resistance tools as you run. Some of these tools include sleds, parachutes, and ankle speed bands. Mirror belts allow you to work on strength and speed as the direction of the game changes. Developing strength with speed is valuable because soccer is as much an endurance game as it is a game of speed.

As an athlete, you must realize that your expertise and skill as a soccer player is ultimately determined by yourself. Practice both on and off the field is key. Each of us, no matter how much we try to hide it, has her own strengths and weaknesses on the field. Time at home is a great time to work out some of these weaknesses with a brother or sister or parent. You do not have to reinvent the wheel; using exercises that you do during official practice will help improve your game. Practicing at home also helps make your family interested in the sport. Invite your parents to play with you, or to watch you play. Your family may even get into the game just by dribbling the ball with you to the soccer field.
